Bourlon Wood Canadian Memorial - Conservation
Arras, France

Bourlon Wood Canadian Memorial is one of thirteen Canadian World War One sites in France and Belgium, which are managed by The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The Canadian Battlefield Memorials Project involved the conservation of these sites to bring these monuments up to standard and correct decades of deterioration. For the Bourlon Wood site, RMA was engaged to review documents and previous studies and produce an options report with recommendations.

Based on the report recommendations, contract documents were prepared and executed to restore the masonry, remove and relay Sanctuary paving, dismantle and rebuild main stairs to Sanctuary, clean the monument using 'le system de gommage’, introduce a drainage system to replace the failed existing drainage and coordinate construction review performed by local specialist heritage architect (Architecte en Chef des Monuments Historiques).
