Buena Vista Road - Renovation and Addition to Heritage House
Rockcliffe, Ontario

A two-storey, red brick structure constructed in 1912, the property is listed as a building of heritage significance within the Rockcliffe Park Heritage Conservation District. The addition was designed to respect the character of the building and was set back to maintain the principal facades of the original. The addition and renovations required approvals based on guidelines for additions to historic buildings contained within the Rockcliffe Park Heritage Conservation District. The guidelines attempt to "ensure that the unique cultural landscape of Rockliffe Park is preserved and that interventions to the heritage conservation district do not detract from the distinctive character of the District; new construction should be recommended for approval only where the siting, form, materials and detailing are sympathetic to the surrounding natural and cultural environments." As a contrast to unfortunate tendencies to tear-down mature house within the District, the project serves as a fine example of sensitive renovation to accommodate the needs of an executive family.
